What will happen at #OCCUPYCHICAGO?

Autonomous action and the fracturing of consensus.
What will happen at #OCCUPYCHICAGO?

Reuters/Stephen Lam Occupy Oakland, Jan. 29, 2012

Three days after Adbusters put out a call to #OCCUPYCHICAGO for a month during the May G8/NATO summits, spectacular clashes erupted between #OCCUPYOAKLAND militants and armored police. Attempts to occupy an abandoned building were put down with tear gas, less-lethal munitions and baton charges. What was new, and surprising, this time around was that some Oakland occupiers came equipped as altermodern Hoplites with plastic and tin shields. And to everyone’s amazement they performed an eerie quasi-military discipline and phalanx formation that had clearly been worked out beforehand. They came ready and willing to confront police. On a symbolic level, the Oakland street battle struck a chord in the movement because its theatrical staging functioned as an inverted repetition of the Brooklyn Bridge arrests that electrified the first phase of Occupy.

In both cases, a group of protesters engaged in the ostensibly illegal behavior (blocking traffic, occupying space) courageously faced down police while spectators, journalists, photographers recorded the scene from the left flank on higher ground. Both events are watershed moments that define phases of the movement. #OCCUPYOAKLAND’s phalanx and #OCCUPYWALLSTREET’s mass arrest represent different, at times compatible and sometimes conflicting, futures of #OCCUPY. That is why #OCCUPYOAKLAND’s public performance of a West Coast anarchist ethos has sent a chill down the international spine of #OCCUPY, sparking raging debates on many movement email lists.

At stake is not who will determine the future of #OCCUPYWALLSTREET. At stake is who will determine the future of #OCCUPY… which is to say what vision of the movement will emerge during the next big showdown, #OCCUPYCHICAGO in May?

Until now many people have believed that #OCCUPYWALLSTREET is synonymous with #OCCUPY and that the beautiful spirit of Zuccotti will forever dictate how the movement unfolds. But this assumption is fracturing as it becomes clear that the movement is actually comprised of dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of autonomous forces acting in concert. The perfect example is OccupyWallSt.org, the flagship website of the movement which is not itself of, or beholden to, the movement. Coding for the site began weeks before any on-the-ground meetings were held in NYC. OccupyWallSt.org explains that they are an autonomous “affinity group” that is not “a subcommittee of the NYCGA nor affiliated with Adbusters, Anonymous or any other organization” which means that they do not receive orders from nor accept the authority of any of these organizations, including the General Assembly of NYC. They are allies but nonetheless autonomous. Of course, this is the same position that Adbusters, Anonymous and the NYCGA take in regards to each other as well. And, when you think about it, it is also the same position that your local #OCCUPY might take towards the dictates of #OCCUPYOAKLAND, #OCCUPYCHICAGO or even #OCCUPYWALLSTREET.

With today’s hindsight it is obvious that what have been called the core principles of the #OCCUPY movement have been overdetermined by an East Coast vibe inherited from the pre-September 17 meetings of the NYC General Assembly, another organization that predates #OCCUPY but has been considered synonymous with it. It was in these meetings that consensus-based general assemblies were agreed upon as the model. It is interesting to read the various declarations of the NYC General Assembly in light of the waning influence that New York occupiers over #OCCUPY as a whole. In these declarations, for example, one detects a frequent slippage between the NYCGA speaking for itself and speaking for the movement as a whole. This used to make sense but it no longer does as murmurs on the West Coast suggest a growing sentiment that the folks on the East Coast have gotten a bit too comfortable with the NGOs, unions and behind-the-scenes power-brokers in DC that the movement explicitly rejected before September 17. #OCCUPYOAKLAND’s powerful emergence is a symptom of the fracturing of the movement as various autonomous forces push-and-pull the movement in new, surprising directions.

The consensus of the movement over itself has been lost. It will take weeks, perhaps months, for these debates to simmer into discussions and then be settled within the movement. Ultimately, the matter will not be decided until we see what plays out in Chicago when the world’s supposed leaders meet and 2,500 journalists are watching. The situation is made all the more difficult because consensus decisions in New York City cannot dictate the consensus in Oakland, Los Angeles, Portland or Chicago. Inter-occupy conference calls are now happening to address this reality. And perhaps even more significant is the looming possibility of multiple #OCCUPYs in the same city. If there are two #OCCUPYOAKLAND general assemblies, one which embraces militant street battles and one which does not, who is to say which has greater authority over the name? Or, what if there is a defunct #OCCUPYX and a new crop of people move in and claim to speak for #OCCUPYX? What is the relationship between a preexisting #OCCUPY and an autonomous group who comes in later, acts autonomously and claims the right to also speak in the name of that city’s #OCCUPY? The old answer would have been that all #OCCUPYs must abide by the declarations of the NYC General Assembly… but this no longer seems tenable.

Behind this soul searching is the unresolved question of whether a movement that fractures into smaller autonomous groups can still build and maintain a consensus larger than its individual parts. The answer is probably yes… after all, we’ve been doing it unconsciously up until now. What is different is that we’re being forced to acknowledge that autonomy is a core principle of the movement, for better or worse.

On dealing with violent

On dealing with violent protesters within the movement.
If you don't support violent action, then don't take any, and do your best to separate yourself from any that you see. If you see someone throwing rocks at the police or building a barricade in the middle of the street, get the hell out of there. Move. Run. Don't even watch. Do whatever you have to do to make it clear that you are not part of that action. The police are operating on the assumption that they are fighting against an angry mob, and if they see one person so much as swinging a stick, they are going to assume (accidentally or on purpose) that everyone around that person are about to do the same thing, and react accordingly. When the news cameras circle overhead, the wont see 20 people erecting a barricade with a 1000 "supporters", they will see those 20 people erecting a barricade by themselves. The entire point of the movement is to raise awareness and gain public sympathy. The public wont be on your side if your fighting back. Let the police beat the hell out of you, but don't provoke it. Every time some cop looses his shit and beats some unarmed protester holding a camera, our movement gains momentum and public sympathy. 150 of us can get our teeth kicked in by a crooked cop, and the MSM will not report it, but as soon as one of us so much as spits at a cop, it'll be on the news. Remember that and plan accordingly.

a waste of time and effort to protest the G8/nato summits. how does it forward the movement to hold protracted showdowns w/ legions of armored riot police? these callouts from adbusters were probly fed-mandated anyhow. and why should we consider ANY media legitimators of actions?

Please don't make something like protesting a matter of fashion. This summit is special. A chance for us to stand out side next to one another and make them hear us, make their damn windows shake. The image that comes to my mind is Tahrir square. People need to make their voices be heard and come together. People are too caught up in partisan games. We're all human and that's what keeps us a part of this society that we're participating in right now. I guess all I'm trying to say from this long rant is let these idiots in charge of our lives know that we're pretty damn fed up.

by Anonymous on February 07 2012, @12:30 pm

Mr David Cameron is hereby invited to support the publication of a book that will prove that the INTERNATIONAL MASON, the very organization that is highly represented in the British Monarchy and Aristocracy are the "WORLD's FOREMOST PROBLEM" as written by the INTERNATIONAL JEW, MR JOSHUA BETHEL who like "Menachim Begin", clearly perceives that the BRITISH ARISTOCRACY is indeed a very powerful organization and has been responsible for a lot of the atrocities that have been happening in the world, and the only reason in my opinion why India still accepts money from the Monarchy of Great Britain is simply because they "spoiled the country" while they were in charge of the Indian Sub continent, then they divided the country by stirring up the MOSLEMS to rebel against the Hindu State!

This resulted in a split up into 3 parts, West and East Pakistan, which is now called Bangladesh, and India itself, the Hindu dominated part!

I hereby challenge MR CAMERON to prove that he is "not averse to negative publicity" and is willing to allow the book to "hit the book shelves"!

by Kyle Lasne on February 07 2012, @12:41 am

Just Stop Already. For starters, every time i bring you up to my friends they say, "What's Adbusters?" and I'm like, the magazine. And they're like, what are you talking about? And I'm like, Adbusters the magazine is putting all this stuff out there for 50k and something. And they're like, 50? -More like 150k. They say. And I'm like. Huh? And they're like, first of all whose adbusters? Never mind. Whoever they are will be outnumbered 2 or 3-1 by all the other peaceful activists. Soo.... And I say, So? And they're like, Who the fuck is adbusters? And I'm like they think they invented Occupy Wall Street. And my friend was like, I thought that was Bloombergville and 16 Beaver St.

Second. I don't think anyone cared about the violence committed by the cavalier anarchits of #oo. Rather we were electrified by the awakening to remember that we are a movement of love. We stand united for fiscal dignity. We stand united for civil liberties. We stand united to continue our education and the education of our fellow citizens on social justice issues such as fiscal dignity, civil liberties, and peaceful revolution.

Third. Peaceful means peaceful. All peaceful activists are welcome to be peacefully active. Peaceful actions. Peaceful Movement. Peaceful change.

I declare World Peace.

by greg_2 on February 06 2012, @08:10 pm

Well, it has become clear, has it not, that the Occupy Movement is dying. Sure, there are occupiers still out there, but no longer is the OM making news. Out of sight means out of mind.

The recent Occupy Boston anti-War-on-Iran had only ~120 people and NO media coverage. This means that it did not even happen.

Occupy DC gets a few measly 100 words in the Times. Nothing going on there!

Occupy Oakland is not in the news at all. Neither is Occupy Chicago. No Occupy Movements get attention at all.

Not many will show up in Chicago I am now convinced. And the MSM will not be there at all. Twitter and Facebook are NOT the MSM.

Call me a cynic, but the OM is fighting a losing battle for the MSM is against it.

Black Bloc tactics is all that is left.

by Anonymous222222 on February 07 2012, @01:25 am

Occupy Chicago was on the news (at least locally) 2 weeks ago for the solidarity march with Oakland. The week before that a member of Occupy Chicago was covered on national NPR.

Occupy Oakland IS certainly on the news every time they have a big action. The media tore them apart and painted it all in a terrible light but I saw it on the news 2000 miles form oakland.

As far as numbers go it's winter. Oakland is still pulling out 1000's Chicago and NY are bringing out 100's (to big events) ... Spring WILL be 10's of 1000's in the streets in Chicago that I can guarantee.

by greg_2 on February 06 2012, @08:54 pm

Oh yeah. Remember what, in the past, changed society?

Marches being disrupted. Police with dogs and firehoses. Lunch counter encounters. Students being found dead in ditches and rivers. Students being shot on campus.

ALL ON TV AND IN MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS!

So far, tear gas, flash bombs, pepper spray, mass arrests, beatings, and other acts of violence upon peaceful occupiers has accomplished NOTHING!

Unfortunately, someone or some people are going to have to die for things to change.

*fuck*

by Anonymous jersey on February 06 2012, @06:28 pm

"street battles" are innevitable as the police have shown us so we either match into an ambush, and take it, and possibly get killed or seriously injured, or we come prepared as they did in oakland with shields and masks and helmets, ect. Defensive stuff. We should attempt to be non violent when possible but we should never let our comrades be brutalized as we stand by. We must not be afraid to interfere in an arrest.

I don't mean to be picky, but

by Anonymous on February 06 2012, @06:03 pm

I don't mean to be picky, but AdBusters REALLY needs to stop phrasing their "Occupy Chicago" call to action as if it is an event that they created that is yet to come. Occupy Chicago is a very accomplished group that has been in existence since September 24th. All participants in the actual Occupy Chicago deserve at least this amount of respect. Occupy Chicago had been planning the #ChicagoSpring (April 7th) and NATO/G8 (May) events well before AdBusters announced their call to action.

Don't Tread on us bro.

by #Ochi Member on February 07 2012, @04:41 am

Don't Tread on us bro. Perhaps Adbuddies is right about one thing, We are each Sovereign yet united. Kind of like the 50 states. Occupy Chicago is doing great things and Adbubbles does not speak for us. I am all the more convinced that Adbubu is just trying to hijack any and all momentum that all occupy encampments achieve. Adbuzzies has infiltrated Occupy Chicago Boards and is trying to work from within. They need to back off and just be a magazine. How can you write an article on something and not mention that you are trying to infiltrate the very thing you are reporting on?

Boo Adbummers.

by Anonymous1 on February 06 2012, @07:09 pm

occupychicago has not occupied one night in a tent. at best, a dozen spent an inspiring week on a streetcorner. with all due respect, ochi has been credited with protests, some huge, the planning of which predated #occupy and which occupiers were a small portion of the always active chi-unions and other groups. nothing much they've done has proven any autonomous accomplishment, tho the press likes to say "occupy" to much of what happens. ochi knew nothing of nato/cang8 until http://cang8.wordpress.com/ went to tell them. can't imagine what the May 1 call would impact their April action, other than give them something to gripe about.

suffice to say, imo, the world coming to chi should probably consider the town unoccupied, and act accordingly.
